| Abstract: | A significant problem for Drexel University is insufficient quality student housing and the inadequate capacity and inconvenient location of the Handshumacher Dining Center. WLHK2 has proposed a new dormitory and food court on the existing volleyball courts at the southwest corner of 33rd and Arch Streets. The site encompasses approximately 26,000 square feet, with a grade difference of 10 feet from the high elevation at the north to the low elevation at the south. The grade difference is utilized in the design of the buildings two main entrances. The volleyball courts on the existing site are relocated to the green space north of the Astroturf recreation field. These courts will provide an increased level of quality and safety to the students. The new dormitory will end the housing shortage as well as increase food service options. The total cost for the construction of the building will be $27,148,500 which will include a 201,100 square foot, fourteen-story, 506-student dormitory with suites housing four students each. Each suite is 1,000 square feet and contains a full-service kitchen and well-appointed bath. The food court on the ground floor will accommodate 350 students and feature fast food restaurants as well as a convenience store, where students can buy personal items, utilizing their flex dollars. The top floor will provide space and equipment for study, relaxation, recreation, and observing the view. These facilities should provide quick, convenient access to goods and services for the students that expand the options currently provided by the student center. |
