| Abstract: | This chapter considers the social science of risk, that is, how society responds to risk. This societal response is typically viewed from three perspectives. One is the descriptive perspective which addresses the question “How do people perceive and react to risk?” A second viewpoint is prescriptive, concerned with the question of “How should we communicate with members of society about risk?” A third viewpoint is normative and asks “How should we manage this risk?” Each of these perspectives is addressed briefly below. |
