| Abstract: | The Virtual Math Teams (VMT) project is an NSF-funded research program aimed at investigating the innovative use of online collaborative environments to support effective K-12 mathematics learning. The software design of the VMT project has several goals: (a) provide tools to support small group collaborative learning; (b) automate the procedures of registration, grouping participants, and the facilitation of collaboration sessions; and (c) provide a reusable resource for future participants’ learning. The software design process requires understanding small group collaboration in math problem solving in order to identify user needs and requirements for the software tools. Exploratory study of collaboration is designed in which students are invited to participate. The study use chat tools with various supporting features, namely AOL instant messenger, Babylon, Concert Chat, and Blackboard chat. The collaboration sessions are recorded as chat logs, which are analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Our initial data analysis indicates users’ possible needs for the following features in the tool we aim to design: 1. a mechanism that enables user to link the previous chat message or graph to the message (either text or graphic) he/she is producing, 2. a shared drawing area with supporting drawing tools, 3. a shared area for notes that the group consider as worth preserving, e.g. notes that keep track of the group’s problem solving progress, 4. an access control mechanism to shared resources, etc. Prototypes are designed to reflect such user needs. And further study is being taken to explore these proposed features. |
